The feast denotes Jesus’ ascension to heaven 40 days after His Resurrection.
Highlights of the feast
Chapel of the Ascension, the Mount of Olives - Afternoon, eve of the feast - vespers (O,Arm, Cp,Syr), early evening Compline (O) with procession to Viri Galilei and back.
On the eve of the feast and in the morning of the feast various congregations take their places in the walled area surrounding the Chapel of the Ascension, (which is in the care of the Muslims), and erect altars and tents. Celebrants of the historical Christian communities hold separate Divine Liturgies concurrently, side by side.
